"Chronic pain / illness becomes the individual and collective catalyst for transformational growth that propels each of us into a state of learning, exploring, and being."

– Marsha D. Banks-Harold

Six in ten Americans live with at least one chronic disease, according to the CDC.

Yoga is often recommended for people with chronic illnesses, yet there is very little discussion about how best to practice. If taught consciously, yoga can offer a sanctuary of self-care for spoonies, people who have energy-limiting conditions, as well as people with chronic pain or other chronic conditions.

Check out our new virtual program, Yoga for Spoonies: Exploring Practice & Teaching for Chronic Illness – a series of 10 workshops featuring diverse voices from the yoga community (now available on-demand).

Yoga for Spoonies is a chance to hear from yoga teachers with chronic illness as well as those who have worked with students with chronic illness for years.

We’ll explore a variety of topics including:

  • Chronic Fatigue (ME / CFS)
  • Cancer
  • Long Covid
  • Chronic Pain
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • and more

Whether you are a practitioner or a teacher, this series is an opportunity to learn from teachers who have navigated these conditions themselves so that you can gain insight for your own practice or to help you guide your students in a safe and effective way.

The workshop series was recorded live and online in February-March 2024. Enrollment includes access to the captioned workshop recordings and associated resources for 1 year, within an interactive online portal.

Connecting to Wholeness

"Living with chronic pain can be incredibly challenging and it's something that cannot be ignored or wished away. However, even amidst the clanging noise of the pain, there is a deep sense of wholeness that cannot be damaged by illness or disease. It's a wholeness that can be re-inhabited if we approach our bodies with tenderness and compassion, and sense them precisely. "

– Rodrigo Souza

Coming Back To Yourself

"For me, the hardest thing about living with persistent post-concussion symptoms after sustaining a Traumatic Brain Injury was being consciously aware that my brain and my body were not functioning the way they used to. As a result, I didn't feel like myself. My yoga practice brings me back to myself. It allows me to feel like myself again. It reminds me that I am still here."

– Shailla Vaidya

Yoga for Chronic Illness

"Yoga can help us navigate the unpredictability, loss, physical symptoms, and difficult emotions that can arise when living with complex chronic illness. Practices such as deep self-compassion (ahimsa), standing firm in our boundaries (satya), and conserving energy by pacing our activities (brahmacharya) are essential tools to support our wellbeing."

Cultivating Compassion

"I have found that Yoga can open up a realm of possibilities to create a life that works with the ebbs and flows of chronic illness, not against it. A life where it's about 'both / and', where curiosity and creativity can flourish, where cultivating compassion and a sense of agency is centered, where interconnectedness with other beings, the land, my breath and my body has been transformative."

– Audrey (Auzhó Yoga)
